Vanguard Completes Printing Press Installation

Vanguard has announced the successful completion of a project for Paarl Web, a division of the Paarl Media Group, one of the most extensive commercial printing operations in South Africa. The project involved the heavy lifting and installation of a MAN Roland 64 page Lithoman IV printing press.

The installation and heavy rigging of the printing press, the largest of its kind in the country, forms part of Paarl Web’s expansion and pre-press upgrade project to fulfil clients’ needs and improve service levels.

The press consists of various components, including the basic folder weighing 23,1 tons, double chopper weighing 21,5 tons, angle bar superstructure, folder superstructure, and the dryer deal part one that weighs 41 tons.

According to Dennis Scholfield, Cape Town Branch Manager, Vanguard, the scope of the project involved unloading of the cargo through to actual installation. “Vanguard has extensive experience in this arena with similar projects completed for printing companies in Gauteng and Cape Town.

“Vanguard discharged all cargo from Paarl Web’s transporter on-site and unpacked and prepared the components for installation. Once everything was in place, we proceeded with the heavy lifting and positioning of the main components,” says Scholfield.

“The offloading process posed a few challenges as it occurred on a public road. The craning and positioning of the components was also challenging due to the space constraints. However, the use of our hydraulic gantries ensured that job was completed successfully.”

Scholfield notes that all lifting equipment was certified and compliant with the Occupational Heath and Safety Act.

Access to the printing hall was gained through a hole in the back wall. Two 30 ton low bed trucks were positioned against the temporary access point. Vanguard’s specially designed jack and roll system was positioned on top of these low bed trucks. Two 50 ton mobile cranes were positioned adjacent to the low beds and craned the components from the laydown area onto the jack and roll system. Once inside the hall, the components were lifted into final position using 60 ton hydraulic gantry system and a 30 ton boom truck.

“In addition to the main components, we unpacked and installed the contents of 15 standard 40 foot containers,” says Scholfield.

Vanguard engineers were also on hand to assist the technician with the mechanical assembly and commissioning of the machine.
